This is a difficult question to answer. I think that it is not easy to be an honest person in life because we are humans, so always human relationships are complicated.
I believe in honesty deeply; for me the truth is always the best way. If you tell the truth you never will be afraid about the idea you have to say.
I think the honesty is the best policy. You have to be brave to believe and keep the truth.
It is very hard to be honest at work or at school, with family or with friends because many times to tell somebody the truth is cruel. You can hurt somebody with the truth; however a lie is nastier than the truth.
It is for this reason that many people are liars and a song says: a lie that makes you happy is better than a truth that turns you crazy. However, I think if you have to do something secret, don’t do it! because sooner or later the truth will be known.
Mark Twain, an American famous writer, journalist and humorist, said: “If you tell the truth, you will have not to remember anything”. This phrase has a great meaning, because if you tell a lie, it would always have consequences, so you have to face that result.
Another phrase that Mark Twain said is that honesty is the best of all lost arts. It is sad, but it is true. People lie every day. All of us have told a lie in our life for several reasons.
Actually, if you are an honest person you can have people’s trust. There is a nice meditation about trust. This is a lesson that a father gives to his son:
The boy has a hard personality. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he told a lie to somebody, he should nail a clove behind the door. The first day, the boy stabbed 20 nails behind the door. The following weeks he told lies to his parents, teachers or friends and nails behind the door.
However, he discovered that it was easier to control his tongue and to reduce his lies than to nail cloves behind the door.
And the day that he could control their habit came. In a whole day, he told the truth in all situations.
The boy told his father that he had learned to be completely honest, so his father suggested him to withdraw a nail every day that he was an honest person.Days passed and the young man could announce to his father that there were no more nails to check out the door...
His father took him by the hand and led him to the door. He said: "You had worked hard, my son, but look at all those holes on the door. It will never again be the same”.
"Every time that you lie to somebody you hurt them and leave scars exactly like what you see here".
You can insult or tell lies to someone and withdraw that you said, but the way that you speak to that person would hurt them, so scars will endure forever.
A verbal offense or lie is as harmful as a physical offense.
