ARE DOLPHINS AS SMART AS HUMAN?
Intelligence is often associated with the ability to learn, understand and analyze using reason and trial. To answer this question is necessary not only to analyze by behavioral dolphin tests but the structures of the nervous system. Simply comparing the dolphin brain and a human brain puts us awake of high intellectual level of the fish. Not only his brain is higher in proportion to body size than men but also presents a big complexity. So cortex, brain layer where the highest intellectual powers reside, it seems to be more extensive and more complicate, but in numbers at least twice. Furthermore, the number of neurons is at least 50% higher in dolphin.
Maybe the mistake is in search of a "human intelligence" in dolphin, which is able to adapt the environment for needs. Some specialists believe that these animals may have a higher intellect to human but in different way.
On the other hand dolphins had ability to learn. They teach to their offspring in order to obtain food and defend themselves to predators. Even dolphins in captivity can teach to others tricks learned during their training.
Dolphins use flicks and whistles to communicate alarm conditions, sexual arousal and other emotional states. Studies of captive animals are showed that dolphins are able to learn, perform tasks with some complexity, communication between them and vocalizing sounds similar to words. Based on this some researchers are suggested that dolphins could learn a language for communicate with humans.
Related with dolphins intelligence I found interesting a comment of Mr. Tito Rodríguez, Director of Argentine Diving Institute who are swum with dolphins: “Who were once in the water with a group of dolphins and listen to communicate with each other, turn around us and re-communicate, we had the feeling of are observed instead of to be the watcher".
